History
Before the existence of the slot machine there was a widespread use of a machine similar to slots but that used to have 5 reels and 50 cards on each reel, the game was to turn the reel and get the better hand, by that time the player usually got free beers for a “pair of kings” and a “royal flush” would usually paid the drinks or cigars. Because of the complications of calculating the payout it was left to the business owner to determine the payout of the different winning combinations.
From the Charles Fey machine they started paying in coins, and started to differentiate from other automatic vending machines of the era. On the same year of the invention of the machine the San Francisco Chronicle picked up a social event of Mr. Fey demoing his machine to a group of restaurant and bar owners, with ruled the machine as success.
By 1907 Charles Fey patterned with Mills Novelty and company, which introduced 20 symbols on each reel of the machine, they manufactured like 30,000 machines.
In 1940 Bugsy Siegel placed slots machines on the floor of his Casino to entertain the wives and girlfriends of the players, and by that action changed the whole face of the gambling industry forever.
